Using thermochromic labels for anti-counterfeiting and tamper evidence
A hidden mark that appears under a warm thumb, a seal that changes colour when torn: simple security features customers can check without a reader.
Most anti-counterfeit features need a phone app, a UV torch or a trained eye. A thermochromic mark needs only a thumb. That makes it one of the few checks an ordinary customer will actually do.
How it works
A thermochromic layer is printed over a logo, pattern or code. At room temperature it hides what is underneath. Rub it with a finger and the warmth — about 31 °C — clears the layer; the mark appears, then hides again as it cools. Ordinary inks used by copiers do not behave like this.
Tamper evidence
For labels that also seal a box, a tamper version changes colour when it is torn off, so an opened pack is easy to spot. A destructible face film can be added so the seal cannot be peeled and reused.
Where it fits
Cosmetics, wine and spirits, electronics, medicines and gift boxes — anywhere a customer might wonder whether the product is genuine.
Design tips
- Keep the hidden mark simple and recognisable: your logo or a short word.
- Combine the thermochromic mark with other security print for layered protection.
- Tell customers what to do: "rub to verify" printed next to the mark.
