Choosing the activation temperature for a colour-changing cup or can label

Cold-reveal, hot-reveal or a colour band: how to pick the temperature, the colours and the format for drinks packaging that tells people when it is ready.

For drinks, a thermochromic label answers one question the customer always has: is it cold enough, or still too hot? The answer depends on picking the right activation point.

Cold drinks

A band that is black when chilled and turns red as the drink warms past about 25 °C works for iced tea, juice and beer. If you want the label to appear only when the drink is properly cold, choose a lower point and a colour-to-clear ink over a printed symbol such as a snowflake.

Hot drinks

For milk tea and coffee, a black layer that clears at about 50 °C and returns below about 30 °C turns the cup into a small surprise: characters, a logo or a message appear when the drink is poured. The same idea works as a warning — the symbol shows only while the cup is hot.

Format and application

  • Sheets for hand application in a shop or for small runs.
  • Rolls on 76 mm or 25 mm cores for labelling machines.
  • Wrap-around bands for cylindrical cups and cans; round or die-cut labels for lids and sides.

What to test

Condensation, ice water and dishwashers are hard on labels. Test the sample on your real container, at your real serving temperature, and check that the adhesive holds when wet and peels cleanly when it should. Send us the drink, container and the temperature you want, and we prepare samples.
